Brisbane’s newest soul spectacular Hello Afro will bring together the city’s finest wax spinners at The Boundary Hotel on the first Friday night of every month. Playing everything from soul classics and rarities, to motown, funk, hip-hop and all other genres in between, Hello Afro promises to massage your ears and get your feet moving.

Passionate about bringing the funk to Brisbane, local promoter John Russell envisioned a place for lovers of soul and funk to come together on a regular basis, and from this idea Hello Afro was born.

“My vision for the night is for it to ultimately be a place for people who dig funk and soul to come and hang out with like-minded people, dance, hear some new music, talk about music, talk vinyl, connect and just have a good time,” he said.

“It’s not the kind of night that you can expect to walk in and the hear Soul Man or Respect or Sitting on the Dock of the Bay. It’s a party hosted by music nuts that have scoured the deep dark crevices of their crates to bring us our new favourite tunes.”

So far there have been some fantastic local artists involved with the project, with Buré and Mike Ford launching the first Hello Afro last month, and DJ Black Amex and Afrogalactic jumping on the decks for the second instalment next Friday.

“Black Amex typically keeps the Valley’s feet hot with her disco, funk and boogie selections, but we’ve asked her to bring the soul to West End. We’ve also got Afrogalactic kicking things off – he’s been going through his friends’ vinyl collections to round out his selections for the set, so no doubt he’ll have some gems to share.”

While it may be early days for this soul-funk haven, John hopes that by the end of its first year, Hello Afro will be known as the go-to place for soul, funk, afro and good times.

“I’d be over the moon if the name were well known and recognized as a regular party and guaranteed good time. I’d also love for it to evolve into a place where people can swap and trade rare vinyl. It would be great for it to become a meeting place of sorts where you can come have a brew, a good conversation about good music and get down to some good tunes.”

So, put your dancing shoes on, and get down to The Boundary Hotel to bask in the beats of Brisbane’s new home of funk – Hello Afro!

Hello Afro #2 kicks off 8pm at The Boundary Hotel next Friday, 6 November. Free entry. More event details here.
